Play-by-Play
Here you'll find a description of the Shitennou's various roles in each act of the manga. To make it easier to follow the individual kings, I've color-coded them (so that if you only wanted to know about, say, Zoisite, you'd just have to look for the green). This will cover not only the Dark Kingdom arc of the BSSM manga, but the Sailor V manga and parts of the Black Moon and Dream arcs as well. The acts are in chronological order of the story's timeline (as opposed to release date; the last few volumes of Sailor V were actually produced after the BSSM series). This is why you will find "Casablanca Memory" immediately after Act 5, as the story takes place sometime after Jupiter appears. This by no means is a complete summary of the volumes described here. It merely summarizes the parts having to do with the Shitennou.
Jadeite
Nephrite
Zoisite
Kunzite
All four Shitennou
Code Name wa Sailor V Book 2, Volume 8
Danburite, leader of the Dark Agency and Sailor V's nemesis, makes his first reference to the man he serves, saying "We still haven't gotten enough of the energy we need. Now, this time... Kunzite-sama has overlooked the many failures we've had before. This should please him."
Code Name wa Sailor V Book 3, Volume 15
Adonis, after confessing his love to Sailor Venus, claims that Venus fell in love with people "even way back then," and an image of Kunzite and Princess Venus together is shown.
Adonis, as Danburite, reveals that he is a soldier under the Shitennou of the Dark Kingdom.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 1, Act 1
Jadeite makes his first appearance after sending a youma to find the Ginzuishou and collect energy in the Osa-P jewelry store. The youma is killed by Sailor Moon's Moon Frisbee while Jadeite watches from Beryl's crystal ball.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 1, Act 2
For the first time, Jadeite names himself as "Jadeite, commander of the Dark Kingdom's Far Eastern division" after being yelled at by Beryl. He sends a youma disguised as a teacher to brainwash people and take their energy in The Crystal Seminar cram school. The youma is defeated by Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Tuxedo Kamen.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 1, Act 3
Once again, Beryl yells at Jadeite, and makes it clear that he has only one chance to redeem himself. He's ordered to switch his focus from finding the Ginzuishou to getting rid of the sailor senshi. Rather than use more youma, he personally executes his plan by posing as a city bus driver and kidnapping young girls who ride it. Rei, who went looking for Usagi, is hypnotized into boarding Jadeite's bus, and Jadeite uses a porthole to drive the bus straight into the Dark Kingdom. Jadeite is stricken by the unconscious Rei's beauty. Upon confrontation by Sailor Moon and Mercury, he uses Rei as a human shield, while using telekinetic powers to fight the two. He manages to freeze Mercury's fog, and catches Moon's frisbee one-handed--but the frisbee traps him. While his telekinetic powers still manage to knock the two senshi off their feet, Rei unexpectedly transforms and, while the crows Phobos and Deimos distract him, fries him with an Akuryo Taisan.
Nephrite makes his first appearance, and characteristically, makes fun of Jadeite's youma. He names himself as "North American command officer, Nephrite," and asks Beryl to hand Jadeite's job over to himself. Later, he's seen making fun of Jadeite's latest plan. His taunts seem to be more friendly than anything, however, as it is Nephrite who watches Jadeite's death from Beryl's crystal ball and becomes furious at the sailor senshi.
Zoisite makes his first appearance, but remains unnamed. He makes a vague comment about whether the sailor senshi might be after the Ginzuishou as well. He also hovers in the background when Nephrite watches Jadeite's death in the crystal ball.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 1, Act 4
Nephrite finds out about the treasure of the D kingdom and decides to investigate it. He stands by Jadeite's coffin and vows to find the Ginzuishou in order to bring Jadeite back to life. Nephrite's shadow, disguised as a woman, sneaks into the masquerade ball and possesses Princess D. The possessed D steals the treasure and hurries outside to give it to Nephrite, but is stopped by the sailor senshi. Nephrite's shadow, which projects a giant image of his face, attacks the senshi and drains the people of their energy. It's destroyed by Sailor Moon's Moon Twilight Flash while Nephrite himself watches from the crystal ball.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 1, Act 5
Nephrite's shadow possesses a mannequin that sits on top of a bridal shop. His shadow drains the energy of young men and stuffs their unconscious bodies into mannequins. When Sailor Jupiter easily destroys his shadow, Nephrite appears and challenges the senshi. Sailor Jupiter blinds him with Flower Hurricane, then fries him with lightning, killing him.
Zoisite watches the battle from the crystal ball and is distraught by Nephrite's death. His name is mentioned for the first time by Kunzite.
Kunzite makes his first appearance, standing idly by while Zoisite watches Nephrite die. He chides Zoisite for not using his head enough. His name is mentioned for the first time by Zoisite.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 11, Casablanca Memory
The music from the Rain Tree music box causes Hino Rei to feel a little nostalgic, and she remembers a man who she fell in love with as a young girl, and employee of her father's firm by the name of Kaidou. The music seems to be playing everywhere in town, and with it comes the oddly rainy weather. Many people begin to feel tired or depressed, and believe the rain is to blame. Rei and Makoto go into a restaurant called The Rain Tree, and a beautiful woman plays the Rain Tree melody on the piano. Her song seems to bring with it a dismal atmosphere, and Rei decides they had better leave. Later, Rei brings some flowers by Makoto's apartment to cheer her up, but finds Makoto sitting in a gloomy trance while the Rain Tree music box plays next to her. Realizing what the music box is doing to her friend, Rei smashes it, causing a spirit to rise from the shattered glass. The spirit turns into the female pianist from the restaurant, and with her appears a piano and a giant rain tree. After a short struggle, Rei attacks with Akuryo Taisen, destroying the illusion. The woman is revealed to actually be Zoisite, who disguised himself to take revenge for Jadeite's death.
In one of Rei's flashbacks, an image of Kaidou appears in her mind, merging with an image of Jadeite. It suggests that Rei's feelings about Kaidou are much the same as her feelings for Jadeite were sometime in the past.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 2, Act 6
Zoisite watches the news of the Ginzuishou with Kunzite on several television monitors. He finally names himself as "European division head, Zoisite." He promises to gather more energy and find the Ginzuishou for Beryl, even though the sailor senshi, Tuxedo Kamen, and all of Tokyo is now looking for it. Disguised as a woman named Professor Izono, he goes on a talk show and tells people about the wonders of the Ginzuishou, convincing the people of Tokyo to search for it more fervently. When no one seems to be able to find it, he uses television signals to drain all of their energy. The sailor senshi try to attack him in the tv tower, but he vanishes before they can lay a hand on him. Sailor Moon uses the Moon Stick to return the all energy Zoisite stole to the people of the city.
Kunzite watches the news about the Ginzuishou with Zoisite. He remarks about how amusing it is that Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Kamen, and the other humans are searching for the Ginzuishou. Queen Beryl, of course, doesn't see this as a laughing matter.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 2, Act 7
Zoisite watches footage of the Sailor Moon on his many television screens. He worriedly wonders what kind of power Sailor Moon has. Beryl tells Zoisite that she thinks Sailor Moon might know where the Ginzuishou is, or even have it herself. He uses videos from Rental Shop Dark to send subliminal messages to people, brainwashing them into attacking Sailor Moon. When Usagi appears to turn the people back with Moon Healing Escalation, he takes that opportunity to attack her. Zoisite grabs her from behind and, while holding knives to her throat, orders Sailor Moon to tell him where the Ginzuishou is. He surrounds himself and Usagi with a shield, so that when the sailor senshi try to attack him, their attacks are shot back at them. When Usagi offers up no information, Zoisite raises the knife in his hand and prepares to kill her. In a flash of light, Artemis somehow breaks his blade in two, and Zoisite is sliced to shreds by Sailor Venus' Crescent Boomerang.
Kunzite is once again shown watching television alongside Zoisite. He raises the question about whether or not Sailor Moon already has the Ginzuishou.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 2, Act 8
Now the last of the Shitennou, Kunzite looks over the coffins containing the corpses of his dead comrades. Finally, Beryl names him as "Kunzite, Middle Eastern command officer." She reassures him that if he finds the Ginzuishou, all of his friends will be revived. He replies that he knows that and, after kneeling and kissing her hand, assures her that he'll kill the princess and her warriors. He appears on an overlook with a view of Tokyo at night, and scoffs at the people who talk about how beautiful the lights are, as true beauty is in darkness. He uses a huge energy blast to cut the power cables and cause a city-wide blackout. While the rest of the city is in darkness, Kunzite makes a light shine around the top of Tokyo Tower, in order to draw the sailor senshi there. His plan succeeds, and a battle ensues, with everyone hovering somewhere around the top of the tower. Kunzite uses the same kind of shield as Zoisite, so that whenever the senshi try to attack him he shoots their attacks back. He tries to aim an attack directly at Sailor Moon, but Tuxedo Kamen gets in the way and takes the hit for her.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 2, Act 9
The distraught Usagi, upon regaining her memories, becomes Princess Serenity and causes the Ginzuishou to appear. Its light breaks through Kunzite's shield and washes over him. Beryl creates a link between the Dark Kingdom and Earth, so that he's transported back to the room with his friends' corpses, and watches the three of them come back to life. Like Princess Serenity, he regains his memories of the Silver Millenium, of how he used to be Prince Endymion's guardian before he and the others fell prey to Metallia. He watches despairingly as the bodies of his three friends turn into stones. The light from the Ginzuishou disappears into Endymion's body. Beryl orders Kunzite to capture the Princess and Ginzuishou, and Kunzite, his mind jumbled and confused, sends a desperate beam of energy in the Princess's direction. Venus and Jupiter block Serenity, however, and he takes the Prince instead. Back in the Dark Kingdom, Mamoru is hooked up to several machines monitoring his vitals. Kunzite says that there is a strange power inside his body.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 3, Act 10
Kunzite stares at the empty, broken coffins where his friends used to lie. He now has two matching earrings. After years of living in Beryl's clutches, he has finally awoken, only to find his comrades turned to stone. He's also found his master, the man he was meant to protect--the very man who lies, captured and unconscious, in Beryl's throne room. While he's watching over the Prince's body, he spots Beryl walking down the hallway. Wondering where she's going, he follows her down into the underground lair where Metallia dwells, and watches as she opens the grand doors and reveals the Dark Kingdom's ruler. Kunzite notices the black mark on Metallia's forehead, the creature's weakness, but makes a hasty retreat before he's found out. It's unfortunate he didn't stay to listen longer, otherwise he would have heard Beryl tell Metallia that she doesn't think Kunzite will last much longer. Later, when Beryl is getting lovey with the Prince's body, Kunzite confronts Beryl about the deaths of the other three Shitennou. Until now she has been telling them that the Ginzuishou would restore those who died to life, but he sees the flaw in her lie--they can't be brought back to life if they've been turned to stone. He asks her straight out what she's going to do with Endymion. Beryl, seeing that Kunzite has come a little too much to his senses, waves her hand, and makes the chunk of kunzite appear in his forehead. She brainwashes him again, turning him into little more than a zombie, saying that because he pledged loyalty to Metallia, no matter how many times he is reborn he will continue to be Beryl's servant. She then sends Kunzite on the Dark Kingdom equivalant of a kamikaze mission--to steal the Ginzuishou from Princess Serenity.
Back in Tokyo, he shoots a beam of energy into the sea, creating a tidal wave that covers all of Tokyo and freezes instantly into, as he calls it, a "desert of ice." Beryl's plan succeeds, of course, and before long, Sailor Moon and the other senshi come after him and heal the frozen people. As she does so, however, Kunzite spots the Ginzuishou hanging from her neck, and starts chasing her. Usagi takes to the sky, and flies straight up into space, Kunzite trailing her. She stops outside of Earth's atmosphere, allowing Kunzite to catch up, and demands to know about Tuxedo Kamen. Kunzite laughs and says that if she gives him the Ginzuishou, he'll kindly return Endymion's corpse. The other four sailor senshi catch up, and, despite Usagi's protests, pool their powers to attack Kunzite. He's completely destroyed, except for the stone in his forehead. Back in Beryl's lair, the piece of kunzite drops to Beryl's feet. Knowing that the last of her Shitennou is now dead, she takes that moment to revive Mamoru, not as he once was, but as a servant of the Dark Kingdom. As the zombie-like Prince rises from the place where he lay, he picks up the stone that had been lying on the floor. When he does so, the other three appear in his hand, and he stares at them blankly, perhaps with some sense of recognition.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 3, Act 11
In the Crown Game Center, Reika drops a book on precious stones while talking to the evil Mamoru. She points out and describes the very same minerals that each of the Shitennou are named after (jadeite, nephrite, zoisite, and kunzite). Mamoru mentions that he just happens to be carrying the same four stones.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 3, Act 12
In a series of flashbacks from the Silver Millenium, Sailor Venus tries to lecture Princess Serenity about visiting Prince Endymion on Earth. Serenity complains that Venus can't possibly know how the Princess feels, as she's never been in love. As she runs off, Venus mutters to herself that she has too. In the next panel Kunzite is shown teasing a blushing Venus about having such a curious Princess, hinting that he and Venus may have been involved, or at least that she had feelings for him.
After being possessed by Metallia and killed by Sailor Moon's sword, Mamoru wakes up, blind and confused, to find Usagi desperately trying to fight off Metallia. As he moves to help her, he feels a stab of pain in the place where the sword stabbed him, and finds the piece of kunzite he'd been keeping in his breast pocket, now shattered from the impact of the blade. As he looks at the stone in his hand, a glowing image appears before him. Kunzite, now clad in the uniform he wore during the Silver Millenium, appears kneeling before him. Mamoru can't see him, but he recognizes his voice immediately. Kunzite explains that Metallia has the power to turn everything to stone, and that she can absorb any energy she comes in contact with. He points out Metallia's weak point--the mark on her forehead. He begins to fade away, but appears again with the other three Shitennou, who are also wearing their original Silver Millenium uniforms. Kunzite speaks for all of them in saying that they're glad they could finally meet their Prince, and that they hope he and Usagi can finally find happiness together. The kunzite stone shatters in Mamoru's hand, and the four vanish from sight. Mamoru realizes that they were the ones who took the sword for him, and brought him back to life.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 5, Act 17
In the midst of attacks from The Black Moon, Mamoru seeks advice from the Shitennou. He opens a glass case which he keeps their gemstones in, and an aura begins to glow around him. The stones rise into the air, and the Shitennou appear, bowing before him. He tells them that he's had a premonition, and that he feels a distortion coming from the earring Petz dropped. Kunzite assures him that they support Mamoru's power, and that they will help him protect the Princess. Mamoru confesses that he sometimes feels like he is powerless, and wonders why he was reborn at all. Even though his purpose is to protect the Princess, she already has the four sailor soldiers for that. Kunzite tells him that they believe in him and his strength. He reminds Mamoru that he will someday become king, and that he must not lose his confidence, because the Princess depends on him.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Volume 13, Act 37
Nehellenia's curse causes Mamoru to become greatly ill. As he lays on his bed coughing, the spirits of the Shitennou hover over him, though he does not seem to see them. They say that the aura around their master's body is weakening, but it is no longer within their power to help him. As Usagi enters, they once again vanish from sight.
